Disease Prevention: do our genes hold the key?
The importance of a healthy lifestyle is a well-known requirement for good health and a long life. There is so much information available to us, which can become overwhelming and confusing. Some lifestyle choices work better for some and not for others.
How do we know what lifestyle choices are better for us?
Could our DNA hold the answer?
Our genetic information is the blueprint for life. Every function of the body is governed by our genes. They have so much to reveal yet most of us don’t know where our genetic strengths and weaknesses lie.
Scientists have found 75% of our genes can be switched on or off.
This means if a person has a genetic risk for a particular disease they may be able to turn those ‘bad genes’ off.
In fact a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine following over 55,000 people over a 20-year period, found that despite a high genetic risk for heart disease, participants making healthy lifestyle changes could reduce their risk by nearly 50%. This means you can have a high genetic risk for a disease but it is possible to still prevent it by making certain lifestyle adjustments.
Forearmed is forewarned as they say.
Understanding your genetic strengths and weaknesses empowers you to fine tune your diet, exercise, sleep, relaxation and supplementation to get the most out of your body.
Knowledge is Power
The team at Genetic Health Plan believe people need to better understand their genetic make up so they can make informed lifestyle choices.
“After 26 years of clinical experience, I now know how much easier it is for a person to prevent rather than cure disease,” says Dr Jonathan Bispham DO (osteopath) and founder of Genetic Health Plan, “often people can reduce their risk of disease by making easy lifestyle changes but we all need to know what changes to make.”
The process starts with a home DNA test kit requiring a simple mouth swab, which is then laboratory tested to establish a person’s genetic code.
The team at Genetic Health Plan analyse the code and from there build a program that reflects the real needs of each individual.
Genetic Health Plan’s Live Better Longer Program uses your DNA test results to create a 13-week individual health plan that may enable you to positively influence your health.
The Live Better Longer Program provides:
- DNA results highlighting your genetic pre-disposition to 44 individual health and diet conditions.
- Explanation of what each condition is, why it’s important and what to do about it.
- Specific actions to take based on your genetic profile.
- 13-week program that shows the best preventative measures for you, to most effectively reduce the risk of the disease or condition based on your results.
- A diet & nutrition guide suggesting dietary requirements specifically for you based on your genetic predispositions.
